Purchase 1-year-old rooted vines, either bare-root or in containers. Plant them 6 to 10 feet apart and with the top of the rootball well below the level of the surrounding soil. Cut the tops back, leaving only 2 or 3 buds.
Any good garden soil that is high in organic matter. pH 6.0 to 8.0.
At planting time, use 1 pound of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet, or 1 tablespoon per plant. For the first year, side-dress with the same amount in midspring and midsummer. In subsequent years, fertilize each spring before new growth begins with ½ to 1 pound of fertilizer per plant.
How much: Apply enough water at each irrigation to wet the soil 1½ to 3 feet deep.
How often: Water when the soil 6 to 12 inches deep is almost dry.
Table grapes should taste sweet and be plump with even color. Wine grapes may be slightly tart, but plump and slightly soft with even color.
